LKG, Nursery & Class 1 Admission Age in Hyderabad: 2026–27 Guide for Parents

Quick answer: Most CBSE schools in Hyderabad follow the NEP 2020 age ladder. Your child should have completed 3 years for Nursery, 4 years for LKG, 5 years for UKG on the school's cut-off date.

For Class 1, the national rule is 6 years. Telangana's own rule for 2025–26 was 5 years by June 1, so always confirm which rule your school follows for 2026–27.

The answer depends on two things: the class-wise age, and the cut-off date your school uses. This guide explains both in simple terms, so you can plan your child's admission without surprises.

1. Admission age chart for 2026–27

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 treats ages 3 to 8 as one "foundational stage": three years of pre-school, then Class 1 and 2. CBSE schools use this ladder for pre-primary classes:

Schools may set a small upper age limit as well, so that children in one class are close in age.

2. What "age on the cut-off date" means

Schools don't check your child's age on the day you apply. They check it on one fixed date, the cut-off date. Many schools use March 31 or June 1 (the start of the academic year). Your child must have completed the required age by that date, not just be turning that age later in the year.

Example: Riya was born on 15 May 2022.

With a June 1, 2026 cut-off, she is 4 years and 17 days old, so she is eligible for LKG.
With a March 31, 2026 cut-off, she is still 3 years and 10 months old, so she joins Nursery this year.

Same child, same year, different class. This is why the cut-off date matters so much.

3. Class 1 age: Telangana rule vs CBSE/NEP rule

Class 1 is where parents get most confused, because two rules exist:

The national rule: 6 years

Under NEP 2020, the Ministry of Education has asked all states and union territories to make 6 years the minimum age for Class 1. Many CBSE schools already follow this.

Telangana's rule: 5 years by June 1 (2025–26)

For the 2025–26 academic year, Telangana's School Education Department kept its own minimum of 5 years completed by June 1 for Class 1.

What this means for you

If your child will be 6 or older on the cut-off date, they are eligible under both rules.
If your child is between 5 and 6, ask the school which rule it follows for 2026–27 before you pay a registration fee.
Rules can change each year, so check the latest notice from the school or the state education department.

4. Born close to the cut-off date? What to do

If your child's birthday falls a few days or weeks after the cut-off date:

Ask for the exact cut-off date in writing, for example on the school website, the prospectus or the admission form.
Ask whether the school allows a relaxation. Some schools allow a small one; many don't.
Think about readiness, not only eligibility. A child who is among the youngest in class may need a little more support in the first year. This is normal and usually settles with time.
Plan ahead. Choosing the right class for pre-primary sets the path up to Class 1, so decide at the Nursery or LKG stage.

5. Documents you need for Nursery, LKG and UKG admission

Keep these ready before admissions open. Most schools ask for:

Child's birth certificate (this is used to check age)
Aadhaar card of the child and both parents
Recent passport-size photographs of the child and parents
Address proof (Aadhaar, electricity bill or rental agreement)
For Class 2 and above: transfer certificate and last report card from the previous school

Each school may ask for one or two more documents, so check the school's admission page.

6. Is your child ready for LKG? 5 simple signs

They can stay away from you for 3 to 4 hours without much distress.
They can tell a teacher when they need water or the washroom.
They enjoy stories, songs and playing with other children.
They can follow a simple two-step instruction, like "wash your hands and sit down".
They can hold a crayon and enjoy scribbling or colouring.

If your child shows most of these signs and meets the age on the cut-off date, they are usually ready.
